Dalai Lama cautions against violent US reaction

Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, cautioned the United States on Wednesday against a violent reaction to the terrorist attacks in New York and on the Pentagon.

"On behalf of the Tibetan people, I would like to convey our deepest condolences and solidarity with the American people during this painful time," the Dalai Lama said in letter to US President George Bush.

"Our prayers go out to the many who have lost their lives, those who have been injured and the many more who have been traumatized by this senseless act of violence."

But the Nobel peace prize winner also appealed for a calm and considered response to Tuesday's attacks, which unleashed a wave of anger and revulsion across the United States.

"It may seem presumptuous on my part, but I personally believe we need to think seriously whether a violent action is the right thing to do and in the greater interest of the nation and people in the long run," the Dalai Lama said.

"I believe violence will only increase the cycle of violence ... I am sure you will make the right decision."

The letter was released from the Dalai Lama's exiled base in the northern Indian hill town of Dharamsala, where special prayer sessions were held in the main temple.
